Renzo Piano Lasts Innovation Projects

Tue 24 Mar | 10:00 - 11:00

Italy is the guest country of REBUILD 2026, and therefore we had to have the finest exponent of its architecture opening our congress. Renzo Piano is considered one of the cornerstones of contemporary advanced and high-tech architecture. For modern architecture, his figure represents the perfect synthesis between bold engineering, structural lightness, and a profound humanistic and ecological sensibility.

Together with Richard Rogers, he revolutionized architecture in the 1970s with the Centre Pompidou in Paris, a landmark that showcases its structural and service elements. Unlike a purely mechanistic approach, Piano elevates technology to an aesthetic and artistic form. He focuses on using modern technology to achieve lightweight, transparent, and functional buildings, often using glass and steel in innovative ways, as in The Shard in London.

And long before it was a trend, Piano integrated bioclimatic strategies, energy efficiency, and low-impact materials into his projects, such as the California Academy of Sciences, which incorporates a functional green roof.

Piano insists that architecture must serve humanity. His works are sensitively integrated into historical and urban environments, seeking dialogue with the surroundings rather than just monumental impact.
The Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW) approaches each project as a technical investigation, comprehensively overseeing the process from conceptual design to construction. This ensures high-tech, handcrafted execution, resulting in iconic works that define his legacy: the Centre Pompidou (Paris), The Shard (London), Kansai Airport Terminal (Osaka), the Jean-Marie Tjibaou Cultural Centre (New Caledonia), and in Spain, the Botín Centre (Santander).
