Back to agenda Architects Communication in Social Media Era Fri 25 Apr | 13:00 - 14:00 AUDITORIUM HOLCIM Premium VIP Pass Why have a session on architects and communication? Undoubtedly, the methods, modes, and messages about architects and architecture have evolved dramatically over time. Architecture is sometimes used to express power, influence, “solidity or longevity,” represent a city, express one’s identity, and many other reasons. Sometimes, the public is swayed in their opinions about architecture via publicity, TV programs, exhibitions, press, word of mouth, tourism, etc. Social media is, of course, also important. With the rise of social media and the decline in the number of recognized architecture critics worldwide, the panorama is clearly changing. (Certain social media outlets are increasingly in the hands of a few, so they are no longer independent voices.) If we add to this the evolution and broadening of roles that those trained in architecture and design may/must fulfill, we now have many moving targets. Despite this “democratization” of media, increased attention to the city, climate change, etc., architects seem to be left out of many important conversations, and their opinions are neglected when significant societal issues are discussed. With four international experts, we will discuss what, why, and how architects and those involved in the built environment can and should think about and do in terms of communication.
