Sounds Wood Meeting Wood Challenges
A Wood Challenge within the framework of the Sounds Wood Meeting (linked to initiatives such as Toca Madera· Sounds Wood and events such as REBUILD) could focus on overcoming technical, sustainable or creative barriers to promote the use of wood as the main material of the 21st century. Based on the construction trends and approach of the Toca Madera platform, here are some ideas of what this challenge will look like: “Mass Timber” Challenge: Design a structure or building component using cross-laminated timber (CLT) or glulam (GLT) that optimizes material usage and minimizes assembly times. Industrialized Construction Challenge: Design a housing module or structural component that must be prefabricated in the workshop and assembled in situ in record time, promoting industrialization and sustainability. Sustainability and Zero Waste Challenge: Create a product, piece or construction solution using exclusively wood waste, reclaimed wood or underused local wood species. Acoustic or Insulation Challenge: Design a wooden enclosure system for high-rise buildings that meets high acoustic and thermal standards, overcoming the prejudice that wood does not insulate enough. Innovation in Connections: Develop a new system of wooden fittings or joints that allows quick assembly and is easily dismantled to promote the circular economy (reuse of components). “Learning by Playing” Challenge (Toca Madera Challenge): Similar to its “Timberial” or “Pasalatabla” games, a didactic challenge for professionals or students to solve a complex structural or construction problem live. These challenges seek not only to innovate, but also to connect different agents in the value chain (architects, carpenters, engineers, developers) to change the way we build.
