The awareness of the factors “inside” and “outside” becomes the same elementary structure. In this sense, architecture must be understood as an element that modifies the natural environment and interacts with it. From this approach, we can argue that Architecture and Urban Planning fulfill a primordial function of delimitation and intermediation with the environment through a series of physical envelopes that separate and, at the same time, relate the exterior space with the interior one. The material and formal characteristics of these boundaries generate both “psychic effects” (aesthetic, compositional and cultural) and “physical effects” (thermal, acoustic and light) on the health of people both together and in isolation. This session will discuss the engineering necessary to create a “psychic influence” that would refer to the subjective perception acquired from the spatial organization and the development of activities within it and an “influence on physical health” that would be associated with the effects on the thermal, acoustic, lighting and hygienic comfort conditions of people.
