Artificial intelligence (AI) is a term that describes when a machine mimics human cognitive functions, such as problem solving, pattern recognition and learning. Machine learning is a field of artificial intelligence that uses statistical techniques to give computer systems the ability to “learn” from data, without being explicitly programmed. A machine becomes better at understanding and providing information as it is exposed to more data. Machine learning includes many algorithms. When applied in construction, the ‘questions’ and algorithms become significantly more complex. For example, a machine learning program can track and evaluate progress on a grading plan to identify schedule risks early. Algorithms can ‘ask questions’ about cut and fill volume measurements, machine uptime and downtime, weather patterns, past projects or any number of inputs to generate a risk score and determine if notifications are needed.
